This historic CD presents live recordings of two world premiere performances: André Previn’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (A TMF commission) at the Rudolfinum during the Prague Spring Festival with Maestro Previn on piano, and his Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet at Boston's Symphony Hall, with the Maestro attending both the final rehearsal and the performance.
"It's always a pleasure to be delighted by music I encounter for the first time. But Andre Previn's Clarinet Quintet is truly special. Its lyricism, invention, and craft are constantly engaging throughout the piece, proving once again what a treasure Previn is. And Tom Martin and the Hawthorne Quartet absolutely glow in the performance."
— Brian McCreath, WCRB Classical Radio Boston
“Both the [Previn] Sonata and the Quintet deserve an immediate place in the modern repertoire, and these performances should ensure that. Previn writes superbly for the clarinet . . . Martin plays with a wonderfully smooth and resonant sound all through . . . The Hawthorne Quartet gives their parts breathtaking vigor, grace, sophistication , and teamwork . . . and Previn brings the same level of expertise and artistic commitment to the keyboard as he does to the podium. . . . Previn’s new contributions are masterly.”
